Journalists in the News: Falling number of media jobs a concern for industry
The number of new journalism jobs has fallen sharply, according to research by journalism.co.uk.
The specialist journalism website found that job adverts from companies like BBC, NewsUK, Telegraph Media Group and the Financial Times fell by around one third.
“Last year’s drop in editorial recruitment figures approaches the downturn experienced during the pandemic in its severity,” said John Thompson, director at Journalism.co.uk.
“But a combination of low salaries and fewer opportunities can only lead to young talent looking elsewhere for careers and could cost an industry that desperately needs to continue to innovate dearly in the long term.”
It follows a recent report by Press Gazette that found there were at least 8,000 journalism job cuts in UK and North America last year.
