New business to open on site of former cannabis farm

A food market is set to open on the site of a former cannabis farm in 2026.

The Helch food markets is expected to be home to six independent food stalls, a DJ, and a new club named ‘The Grow Room”.

The venue, formerly Vodka nightclub, was subject to a drugs raid in November 2023, where police found a cannabis farm.

Jamal Benamor, the founder of the Bournemouth branch and now the Winchester branch, said: “It was the perfect spot, it was a blank canvas and one of the biggest buildings in Winchester, and for the concept for a food market, you need a lot of space.”

Mr Benamor was not worried about the venue’s past and decided to use the reputation to the advantage of the market.

He said: “It was obviously a cannabis farm; some people might think it still is. It is like a pun, I suppose, so it will be themed as a greenhouse jungle with a hidden door.”

According to Mr Benamor, the idea of a cannabis themed bar has received negative opinions.

He says authorities think the name is “inappropriate” and that neighbours believe it will become a “full-on nightclub again”.

But he reassures them that “it’s more of a food hall and late-night bar. I think a lot of them are actually excited now for what music it will bring to Winchester”.

Construction is still under way, but is nearing completion.

The venue was initially anticipated to open in the autumn this year, but has been pushed back.

Mr Benamor has confirmed that it is guaranteed to open soon, with a proposed date of January 28, 2026.
