Newcomers Colden Common hit first-ever league lead after Alresford win
Colden Common have made history this weekend, rising to the top of the Wessex Division One table for the very first time following their 4-1 win on Saturday against Alresford.
It’s a landmark achievement considering it’s their first time ever completing in the Wessex Division One, the win not only extended their impressive run of form but also sees them draw level with Fleetlands, but are top due to goal difference.
Goals from Cam Stone, Jimmy Walters, Ben Sunley and Josh Bowerman helped the Staillions overcome strugglers Alresford Town, with Billy Grimes finding the back of the net before half-time for the Magpies.
Steve King told Winchester News Online: “I think at the beginning of the season, the expectation was to just sustain and see how well we can actually do.
“I wouldn’t say, we are overachieving because I think we deserve to be where we are.
“It’s nice to be top of the tree, especially so close to Christmas.”
Next up for Colden Common is a home tie against United Services Portsmouth and a trip to Fleetlands, which looks set to be a top of the table clash.
King stressed that every game is a must win: “We don’t look towards Fleetlands yet. It’s still just another game.
“It doesn’t matter that people talk about it being a top of the table clash.
“We treat it as another game because if we start fourth or fifth come January, February, we still exceeded our expectations.
“Each game, one at a time and we will try and win the game no matter what.”
