This Solent University student headed to Australia to compete against the world’s best ocean paddlers in the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships.

Phillips, a 21 year old high performance athlete, competed in four out of five races in the Shaw and Partners WA Race Week-one of the most converted ocean paddling events in the world- before he went onto compete in the World Championships.

In the shortest race of 300m Phillips narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing 4th, in both the 12 km races Phillips finished 5th and in the gruelling 27km race from Rottnest Island and then back to Perth he finished 10th.

Despite qualifying for the championships back in the summer Phillips had wait until he had the green light from the university before he could set off down under.

Phillips said: “They have helped me with funding to get out here. Without the uni it wouldn’t be possible to be out here.”
