Southampton overcome fire and Sunderland to claim thrilling late win
This Saturday Southampton managed to play their home game at St. Mary’s stadium against Sunderland, having overcome the initial doubts of whether the game was going to be played or not, given there was a fire in a nearby building just a few days before, which resulted in the Southampton vs Preston North End game having to be postponed.
The game started with a clear dominance by Southampton, which led Stuart Armstrong to score the first goal for the Saints in the 9th minute.
At the end of the first half Sunderland player Chris Rigg caused a penalty after a poor tackle on one of the Saints’ players to stop him from getting by with the ball inside the penalty box. Adam Armstrong managed to convert it into a goal for his team, giving them a 2-0 lead.
After half time we saw a completely different game by the Sunderland team, with more control over the ball and more possession than in the first half, this led to their first goal in the 62nd minute which gave them the motivation they much needed and resulted in another goal for the visiting team by Jobe Bellingham only a few minutes later. His goal could be called the best goal of the game not only because it meant the result was now 2-2 and it was a comeback for the Sunderland team but because it was an amazing goal from outside the box.
However, this draw wouldn’t last long because in the 77th minute a goal by Joe Rothwell would give the lead back to Saints and only a few minutes later they scored another goal that gave them even more of an advantage to win the game. After the goals that led Southampton to a 4-2 win we saw a big number of Sunderland fans leave the stadium way before the end of the match, disappointed by the result after their team managed to draw the game but weren’t able to maintain it long enough to at least give them one point.
With seven minutes of extra time the game finished giving the win to Southampton after an interesting second half with good football played by both sides.
