Winchester Flyers beaten comfortably by Wycombe Wanderers
The Winchester City Flyers fell to a 4-0 defeat against Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend on their return to league action.
The Flyers came into the game on the back of a 28-1 hammering of Overton Youth in the North Hampshire Cup.
In an even first half it was the visitors who had the opening opportunity, a shot from inside the area being blocked by Sam Burt on 13 minutes.
Just seconds later the Flyers had their first chance, with Laura da Silva failing to add to her hat-trick in the previous game when her effort was blocked by the Wycombe defence.
On the half-hour mark the visitors came close to breaking the deadlock when a seemingly goal-bound effort was cleared off the line by City’s Emily McDonough.
Winchester’s resolve was eventually broken shortly after the restart; a pinpoint ball into the penalty area was met by Wycombe’s Eman Kassem, whose powerful finish gave the away side the advantage.
With 15 minutes left of the game the Chairgirls found their second after another excellent delivery was met in the box by Kassem, whose header was too strong for Shannon White in the City goal.
Things went from bad to worse for the Flyers when Wycombe’s Jessica Watkins scored directly from a corner kick to make it 3-0.
The away side sealed the win with a couple of minutes remaining when Kassem bagged her third, and her side’s fourth of the game.
After the match, Winchester Flyers assistant manager Gabriel Heidler said: “Once that second goal goes in, third goal goes in, it becomes a completely different game.
“Was it a 4-0 game in the end? Probably not, but they were quite clinical.”
