Winchester Parkrun cancelled as emergency services deal with incident

The weekly 5k event which runs every Saturday at 9am was cancelled on October 12th just 30 minutes before it was due to start.

Winchester Parkrun apologised in a statement on its Facebook page but said that the situation was “completely out of our control”.

The last-minute cancellation occurred when participants had already arrived at North Walls Recreational Ground.

Emergency services were dealing with an incident “towards the rugby club” in which the police had later confirmed that a man’s body was found.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said that the incident was being treated as “unexpected but not suspicious”. The man’s next-of-kin had been made aware.

The body was found just 30 minutes before the Parkrun was due to start and therefore organisers were forced to cancel the event.

With the Winchester fireworks show scheduled for November 9th, Winchester Parkrun has informed its followers on Facebook that the 500th event in Winchester is now due to take place on November 16th.
