Basingstoke Town FC chairman steps down

Terry Brown has resigned as the Chairman of Basingstoke Town FC after four years at the club.

In an open letter to the fans, Mr Brown said: “Having had the honour to represent your club, albeit in some of the most difficult times in history will stay with me forever.”

He said that he believes now is the right time for him to step down, as the club requires “a new chairman with energy, vision and expertise to drive the club forward into the next decade”.

This comes after the club, under his leadership, was able to acquire a new ground to play on last month, having spent a year playing home fixtures in Winchester following a legal dispute with the owner of The Camrose Stadium.

Having achieved this, he believes that the “second phase is a far longer project” that would best suit someone else, who can ensure that the football slub and town “get back the second stadium that has been taken from them”.

He added that “the largest town in England without a League Football Club cannot be confined to playing at a ground that can only accommodate Southern Premier Football”.

Mr Brown, 68, took over as manager in 2016, and was appointed Director of Football in 2018. He is notably the manager who took AFC Wimbledon to the football league for the first time since their team’s rebirth.

On 30th November, it was announced that vice-chairman Kevin White will be his temporary replacement.

He said he was “honoured to be asked to be chairman of this great club” and that he will “continue Terry’s work into immersing the club into our community”, and he is “looking forward to a bright future”.
