A woman has been knocked over and market stalls have had stock damaged in Winchester, after a thief sprinted down the street.

The incident happened on Winchester High Street at around 3pm yesterday.

Eyewitnesses claim that the man had attempted to steal a phone from Vodafone before running into two stalls and then the woman.

The woman, who is in her 60s, sustained a leg injury.

Stall holder Eddie Sullivan described the moment his stand was hit as “like an explosion”.

Another witness, Andy Peach, had £50 worth of glass decanters from his stall smashed.

He said: “I heard a crash of glasses and shouting, and saw a young lad running towards me.

“I tried to stop him with a shoulder barge and he fell on the floor.

“He then got up and jumped over the stall, before knocking the lady to the ground.”

Police are currently investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made.
