Farnborough roadworks: Lynchford Road paving operations causes disruption
Residents of the Lynchford Road in Farnborough have faced interruptions to their sleep and massive detours on the roads this month after work to expand the capacity of the A3011 began taking place during the night.
Paving operations took place just metres away from people’s front doors as late as 1:30 AM , with many disgruntled residents taking to Facebook to express their frustration.
One resident, who posted anonymously, complained that the steamrollers used to pave the road made so much noise, “it sounded like the world was about to end”.
Road closures due to Hampshire County Council’s plans to expand the main road have caused traffic backlogs for over a year now, making travel times in North Camp and the surrounding areas significantly longer at peak times.
Some local businesses have reported a decrease in customers, including Chinese restaurant, Yumi Yumi.
Manager, May Yoke Chong, said that due to a lack of parking, there have been cases where customers arriving to collect food “drive round looking for parking” but by the time they find anywhere the food is getting cold.
The council has stated in their scheme overview that the works are necessary, as they will “accommodate increasing travel demands in Farnborough”.
The council said: “Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership has identified Farnborough as one of its ‘growth towns’ and has allocated £6.472 million […] for transport improvements.”
So far, the road has largely been resurfaced and a brand new two way cycle lane has been added along a stretch past shops in North Camp Village.
Nevertheless, delays have been prevalant throughout the process pushing the initial deadline of winter this year back to at least February 2024.
Furthermore, the initial council estimate of £10.8 million for the works has now been revised to nearly £13 million.
Works remain underway so whether these new deadlines and estimates will remain accurate is yet to be seen.
