James Cleverly OUT – Badenoch and Jenrick in the final.
After leading round three yesterday, James Cleverly has been voted out of the Conservative Party leadership race.
Gasps were heard in Parliament as it was announced that Mr Cleverly had missed out on a final two spot in the Tory Party leadership election.
Cleverly, had leapt into the lead in the last stage of voting beating out both Robert Jenrick and favourite Kemi Badenoch.
However, he lost votes dropping down to 37 votes from 39, whilst Badenoch and Jenrick won 42 and 41 respectively.
On social media, Cleverly said: “Sadly it wasn’t to be.”
“We are all Conservatives, and its important the Conservative Party unites to take on this catastrophic Labour government.”
Some political insiders have pointed to potential over confidence in the Cleverly camp as the reason he lost out.
Cleverly was the sole remaining member of the One Nation wing of the Tory Party.
Whilst Badenoch and Jenrick are both represent the right of the party.
One of the main talking points in the leadership election has been uniting the party, Cleverly leaving means that Badenoch or Jenrick will have to unite the party whilst being on the right, which plagued Rishi Sunak’s last government with factionalism and infighting.
Badenoch is seen as someone not to shy away from controversial issues, with Jenrick focusing on issues such as immigration and leaving the ECHR.
Members of the Conservative Party will vote in this final round of the leadership race.
Voting starts 15 October and ends on 31 October, with Members voting either via postal ballot or online.
The winner who will be announced on 2 November.
They will be replacing Rishi Sunak who resigned after leading the party to its biggest electoral defeat in the party’s history.
Former home secretary, Priti Patel was the first to be voted out in round one, with Mel Stride following her in round two.
