Wild New Forest ponies are set to be “treated as farm animals” if a controversial proposal goes through.

Hampshire’s councillor Ken Thornber wants to fence in roaming animals in the New Forest.

The idea of the fences is to stop the number of road accidents in the New Forest  – 63 animals killed and 35 injured last year.

Justine Bayley, of the New Forest Verderers, said: “It will pin the animals into enclosures and they will be treated as farm animals.”

Drivers in the New Forest have been advised to keep to the speed limit of 40mph on the unfenced forest roads.
