New green space in Winchester

Residents in one Winchester suburb can look forward to Hillier’s Haven, a new green space due to be finished later this year.

The site is beside Hillier Way car park in Abbotts Barton and will be home to a natural recreational area and a hut for the Winchester scouts.

One lucky cub scout, nine-year-old Tom Duxbury, who’s suggestion was chosen to name the space, said:

“I live nearby and walk past the space for school and rugby so I’m really excited about Hillier’s Haven opening.

“I came up with the name because it is near Hillier Way and chose haven as it’s somewhere to come to be peaceful and quiet.”

However, in May of this year Abbotts Barton Community Group raised concerns that certain resident requests had been missed, as an activity area and new benches have been left out of final plans. The group says these were sought after, with many residents voting for them.

The Group believe that the money should be spent appropriately and to the needs of residents, and were seeking views to present to the council.

The suggestions above have not made it into the final plans, and the proposed budget of £70,000 in May has now been increased to £100,000 so that the project can be completed this year.
