Luxmuralis brought their “Poppy Fields” to Winchester Cathedral for the first time.

Poppy Fields was created by artist collective Luxmuralis, who have previously displayed work in the cathedral. This is the first time that this immersive light trail visited Winchester.

Created by lead artist and director Peter Walker, Poppy Fields features a series of projections based on the theme of Remembrance. The show reflects on the First and Second World War and looks ahead for peace.

This includes a tribute to the NHS, a poem read by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne, and a simulated field of poppies.

Peter Walker worked with David Harper to compose original music for the show. Each show is slightly different as the work is re-produced for each building it visits.

Peter said: “It is a challenge because of the scale of the building but it is always a privilege to work in these places.”

He said: “Poppy fields has developed and now allows us to do 2 things both look at the past and to remember but also what comes out of war and conflict should always be a desire for peace.”

Luxmuralis brings to life the art that fills the cathedral through contemporary media which also helps the audience take in all aspects of the cathedral.

Peter said: “We say we create the stained-glass windows of our time which you see through these stories and concepts.”

One of the main aspirations at Luxmuralis is bringing people together through their artwork and displays. Through Poppy Fields Peter hopes that the art inspires talks amongst families no matter their age or background.
