Southampton sack Will Still after poor start to season

Southampton have sacked Will Still after just five months in charge following a poor start to the season.

He won just two league games as manager, leaving the Saints in 21st position in the Championship, just three points off the relegation zone.

Under-21s manager Tonda Eckert has taken charge of the first team on an interim basis while the club look for a new boss.

Russell Martin is among the favourites to take over at St Mary’s, having previously spent time at the club.

He led the Saints to promotion in the 2023/24 season before being sacked midway through their disastrous Premier League return last campaign.

Brendan Rodgers, Ralph Hasenhüttl and Michael Carrick are also under consideration to replace Still in the hot seat.

It is still early in the season, but Southampton’s next manager has a big task ahead of them as they must help the club avoid suffering a back-to-back relegation, something managed by just a handful of former Premier League clubs.

Eckert will take charge as Saints travel to face Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday night.
