Students are being encouraged to befriend old people to help ‘fight elderly isolation’.

LinkAges is a ‘student run volunteer service’ that organises a range of events to bring old people together to socialise in the local Winchester area.

Another group set on helping elderly people fight isolation is Home Instead Senior Care, the company aiming to get support to older people in their homes.

One of the ways Home Instead Senior Care is hoping to get over 60s out to socialise is by organising a free monthly cinema trip to Winchester’s Everyman cinema.

So far the trips have had about 45 people turning up with their carers to enjoy films such as La La Land and Churchill.

All showings are dementia friendly by having the house lights on and having the sound slightly lower than usual. All donations are sent to Dementia Friendly Winchester.

The next trip will be on Monday where patrons can view Victoria and Abdul.
