Drivers might have the opportunity to travel to the Isle of Wight in a new underwater tunnel.

The £1 billion development hopes to build two dual-carriageways to link Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, to provide an easier means of transport for drivers across the south of England.

A statement from Able Connections Ltd, the group behind the project, has said: “The project envisaged to follow from a successful study, will create a new North – South axis route.”

The statement adds: “The tunnelling construction will provide the vital connectivity to support economic growth and easing of traffic congestion, by delivering sustainable transport in the heart of the region.”

Fareham Borough Council have a ‘Solent Strategic Economic Plan’ which supports the tunnel scheme:

“The main focus of the growth strategy is improving connectivity with the Solent and beyond.”

Although no date of construction has been released, there is confidence that residents in the area can avoid using ferry services once construction has gone well underway.
