The Winchester Christmas Market is only days away

The Winchester Christmas Market is set to return in just a matter of days, drawing thousands of visitors back to the historic city centre.

Workers have been transforming the Cathedral grounds, assembling stalls and installing lighting ahead of the official opening.

Every year the market becomes one of the south’s most popular seasonal attractions, known for its handcrafted gifts, unique food and festive atmosphere.

But behind the festive lights, mulled wine and wooden chalets lies months of detailed preparation that begins long before the first decorations appear.

Deputy general manager, Jack Moorhouse, says preparation begins well in advance.

“The Christmas Market is something we plan all year around, as soon as one market finishes, January we start planning again.”

Like many major events, the Christmas Market faces its own set of challenges.

Yet despite the ongoing cost of living crisis, organisers say interest remains strong.

“The market itself, year on year, tends to get more publicity and actually gets more busy each year.”

The Winchester Christmas Market officially opens later this week on 21 November and will run until 22 December, giving visitors plenty of time to soak up the festivities.
