Winchester flooding causing significant delays
Water was gushing down Romsey Road towards the High Street this morning (December 2nd), which caused several issues throughout Winchester.
Many people’s journeys through and into the city were significantly disrupted.
Southern Water were at the scene attending to the issue.
Workers said the flooding water was caused by a broken valve.
When asked when things can be expected to go back to normal, they estimated a few days.
Temporary traffic lights are still in place.
Isabella Baldanza, a student at the University of Winchester, was frustrated by the bus delays and cancellations on her way to university this morning.
She said: “I left at 9:20, I usually get the number 2 from Stanmore into the city centre.
“The first bus was delayed by fifteen minutes but didn’t show up, the second was supposedly meant to come by 9:40 but didn’t turn up, then the third was 10:05 but didn’t turn up again.
“There was no communication via the Stagecoach app so I was unsure what happened until I heard about the flooding.”
On the Stagecoach website, it states that Southern Water’s ongoing works on Romsey Road “make certain manoeuvres impossible in a bus” which limits their service options.
One local man walked past the road work and shared his frustration with water companies “putting our prices up”.
He said: “If you look in Winchester today – a flood going down from the barracks and this is where our money is going.”
Southern Water acknowledged a leak on Romsey Road on their website last Friday evening.
They stated: “We are aware of a reported leak within this vicinity.
“Our Inspector will investigate this and if deemed to be a fault on a Southern Water asset, schedule for this to be repaired.”
It appears such work is now being carried out.
Southern Water encourages customers to report any suspected leaks on their site.
