Winchester Road Closures

Winchester has two major roads that are currently closed due to essential road works, and will be until spring of 2024.

Garnier Road is located just off of the M3 in the south of Winchester and has been shut since March 1st. Hampshire County Council stated the work being done on Garnier Road to “Tunbridge” was needed as the now over 100 year old bridge is in an unfit condition for cars and other large vehicles to cross.

A replacement of the bridge deck is being installed, with the original plans for the work to be completed by early November scrapped. It is now expected to remain shut until February.

The closure of Tunbridge and Garnier Road has also affected The Handlebar Café, which is located just at the base of St. Catherine’s Hill, next to the River Itchen. The café is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists, but with the closed road being one of the businesses main entrances, it is no longer as easy for people to just drive down and grab a drink.

North Walls is the other main road in Winchester which currently has continued work being done to it over concerns of the safety and stability of the wall, and can be found just north of Winchester High Street.

The work started on October 16th and is said to be done by March 5th, but until then both traffic and pedestrians shall be disrupted by the closure.
