‘Badly needed’ hospice soon to come to Winchester
Royal Hampshire County Hospital has started work on restoring Burrell House, a currently un-used building on the hospital site.
The derelict World War 2 era structure will be getting a new face by early 2019 as a 10-bed hospice for those in need of end-of-life care in Winchester after being listed for demolition 14 years ago.
Maddy Thomson, the Clinical Matron for Palliative and End of Life Care in Winchester, told Winol: “This hospice is badly needed in Winchester and will have huge benefits for those in need of end of life care.”
So far, the nearest hospices are in Andover and Basingstoke, the hospice hopes to provide closer to home support for those who need it most.
The new hospice is expected to provide home care as well as therapy and care for out-patients “in a hospice that feels more like a home than a hospital” as stated by Hampshire Hospitals.
The budget of up to £2.5m is expected to be raised through individual efforts and charitable donations from the community. Upcoming fundraising events includes a Christmas raffle.
A Free Health Focus event will be held at Winchester Guildhall on November 28th to discuss the hospice plans and future fundraising efforts with the current palliative care team as well as trust executives.
