Binge drinking at Christmas time
What’s the most important part of Christmas?
Is it the presents, the delightful food or the joy of spending it with the people you love?
Well for some it is none of these things. For some people, drinking is a huge part of their Christmas.
Binge drinking or excessive drinking is drinking more than the recommended units per week.
Or drinking a lot in a little amount of time.
More than 14 units a week is considered bingeing, this is the same as drinking more than a bottle and a half of wine a week.
According to the drink aware websites and the guidelines offered on the NHS website over half of adults in the population turn to binge drinking and excessive drinking especially during this festive time.
Most will indulge booze in the Christmas spirit but what if you were told that this is one of the most dangerous times of the year for alcohol consumption.
The Samaritans revealed some astonishing statistics that show that on average they receive 13,000 calls a month surrounding drugs or alcohol however this number drastically jumps to 35,000 calls in December relating to drinking related incidents and accidents.
If you are concerned about your own alcohol consumption over this festive period, advice can be found on drinking awareness websites and the NHS websites or ask a healthcare professional.
But most importantly remember it is okay to say no.
Do not feel pressured or pressure others into drinking
And stay hydrated whilst you enjoy your christmas.
