Crunch time for city’s food waste

Residents have been told to cut down on their food waste by a Winchester environmental charity.

Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) is hosting a talk to highlight the issue on Thursday.

The meeting which is taking place at 6.30pm at Master’s Lodge on Romsey Road aims to encourage members of the public to avoid food waste by growing their own food and composting their leftovers.

Clare Shorter, chair of WinACC’s Incredible Edible, said: “There is currently no food waste collection in Winchester. This is something that WinACC is trying to make the council consider; our food waste collection isn’t as up to date as other places.”

WinACC is also urging people to keep carbon emissions down by “buying seasonal British food”.

The group will meet again next month, where they hope that the council will play a more active role in the city’s sustainable food problem.
