Historical Winchester landmark saved by funding

Winchester residents are “delighted” that historical Hampshire landmark has been granted funding for vital maintenance works. 

A recent report showed that Winchester City Mill was facing potential collapse, along with the bridge next to it, if flood protection measures weren’t put into place. 

The Grade II listed building requires a complete overhaul, with an investigation showing it will need a significant change to the overall design, as well as three new sluice gates in order for it to be structurally sound for years to come. 

A Winchester resident, who was in favour of the Council investment, said: “I’m delighted the work is going to go ahead. The mill is such a big part of Winchester’s history and it would be such a shame to lose it. I hope that after this work it can continue to be such a great landmark.”

An additional £500,000 was granted by Winchester Council- which has taken the total cost of the project to £1.2million. 

A report to Winchester City Cabinet said: “The National Trust has been repairing City Mill from the flood damage suffered in 2014, and have been carrying out modelling work on the stability of the structure. This has shown that the building is extremely vulnerable to damage from flooding, at water heights which are within the anticipated flood levels in the future according to the latest flood modelling.”
