Romsey home alight again, just hours after initial incident

Just 24 hours after a large house fire killed a 50 year old woman in Romsey, a second fire broke out in Jacobs Close this morning.

Fire rescue, police and paramedics were called back to the scene just before 8am on Tuesday, February 5.

The cause of the initial fire in the first floor bedroom, that started in the early hours of Monday, is currently being treated as ‘unexplained’.

Over 20 firefighters from Romsey, Eastleigh and Redbridge came to tackle the original blaze, which sadly took the life of a woman in her 50s, and caused another man in the premises to be hospitalised due to smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said: “Although the cause of the first fire is currently unknown, we can speculate that the secondary fire this morning was possibly due to a re-ignition. We had five engines come out this morning and the fire was out by 9:55am.”

A report of the incident has been sent to the coroner, as part of an ongoing investigation into the original cause of the fire. 

Romsey Town Councillor, John Parker, said: “It is a very sad incident and it is very rare in our area. My thoughts are with her family.”
