Southampton City Council are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents in light of terror attacks.

Though there are no suggestions indicating that the city is at risk, they want to take proactive steps to ensure the safety of the public and create reassurance following the tragic events across Europe.

The city council are working with police to devise a system preventing someone driving a vehicle into a large crowd gathered for events.

Concrete bollards were installed strategically surrounding the Guildhall Square where the Oktoberfest event took place between Thursday 26 and Sunday 29 October.

Mr Daniel Tong stated “We worked closely with Hampshire Police and the event organisers to ensure, that despite this additional security measure, any disruption was kept to an absolute minimum”.

With upcoming events such as The Remembrance Sunday Ceremony and the Southampton Christmas Festival, these events will be similarly protected with these temporary bollards.

The Council are investigating a long-term solution for future events.

“We would like to reiterate that the safety of our residents and visitors is of paramount importance and the extra security measures are purely precautionary.”
