Colden Common have extended their unbeaten run to six games after their dominant 4-0 victory over Liss Athletic on Wednesday evening, which saw the Stallions three goals up at the break.

Both sides came into this fixture with a great runs of form but Liss, who have not lost a league game since early February, saw their ten game unbeaten run ended at Oakwood Park.

This is only the fourth defeat for the Blues since the start of the new year.

Theo Glazer’s header was palmed away by James Egeland-Jensen, which led to a quick counter-attack for Colden Common. Matt Driver was picked out as his low drive from close-range bounced past keeper Sam Waine to give Steve King’s side a deserved lead.

Shortly afterwards Colden Common continued to apply the pressure after the goal with both Brad Lethbridge, Alpay Ali, who was denied by the post, and Jack Darnton having chances to score.

Liss continued their sloppy performance, which the Stallions took full advantage of. Callum Archer threaded Ali through on goal as he slotted past the keeper, with skipper Seamus Evans failed to clear the ball away and guiding it into the bottom corner.

Jamie Driver fired wide before Ali’s fancy footwork allowed an onrushing Archer to net his fourth goal in eighth appearance for Colden Common.

Just before half-time, Liss finally had a chance to get back into the game but Glazer blasted over a free-kick from a good area.

Liss certainly started the half the better side as they looked to gain an early goal. Johnny Kracmar directing a header over with Angus Mackay failing to convert from close-range after league top goal scorer Elliot Harrison squared it across the face of goal.

Josh Harvey-Gray, who definitely has shouts for a goal of the season contender, was able to able to extend their lead. The wing-back was able to convert after finding the back of the net after skilful dribbling past four defenders.

Thomas Finch, John Holden and Ali Elyasi had chances late on to make it five with Jack Butler firing his strike late in added time for Liss.

Colden Common have now leapfrogged into sixth, despite starting the month down in 11th, and have an outside chance of finishing in the top four – which would be an unbelievable achievement for the club after spending the first half of the season in a relegation battle.

What is next for both sides?

King’s side will travel to the Hayling College as they take on strugglers Hayling United on Saturday. Three days later, Colden Common will return to Oakwood Park as they host Denmead.

Liss Athletic are also on the road as they bounce back against Stockbridge, with the Robins being one point behind the Blues in fifth.
