Winchester City return home after six months

Winchester City FC have played their first match back at the Charters Community Stadium following extensive redevelopment work over the summer.

No football had been played at the ground since City’s 1-0 win over Beaconsfield Town back on 20th April.

The refurbishments included the construction of a brand new all-weather pitch, new perimeter fencing, floodlights, spectator stands, a new car park and more.

The first game to be played at Winchester’s new facilities was a huge FA Cup tie against National League South side Weymouth. City looked to be on for the upset when they led 2-0 going into the final minutes of the game.

However, two late goals from the visitors forced the tie into a replay.

Despite failing to pick up the win they were hoping for, reactions after Saturday’s curtain-raiser were positive.

Manager Craig Davis said: “It’s great to see such a big crowd here today.

“We’ve been desperate to get back home, it’s been really tough so far this season… and the community element of it as well, we’ve got kids football from seven all the way up to under 23 and it’s the same with the ladies football as well.”

Due to the renovations taking longer than expected, the Citizens were forced to play their opening games of the season at the Winklebury Football Complex, home to rival Southern League side Basingstoke Town.

The new artificial pitch will allow football to be played at the site throughout the whole week, and will prevent matches from being postponed due to bad weather in the winter months.
