How did the pedestrian get to the other side?

A petition for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on a busy Winchester route for pedestrian has nearly reached 500 online signatures.

The potential crossing would be situated on a popular route for all pedestrians leading to and from the station on Romsey Road, at the junction where St James Terrace and Clifton Terrace meets.

Pedestrians can be seen queuing on either side of the road throughout the day waiting to cross the road safely.

The petitioners from Winchester’s Green Party were out in full force on both St James’ Terrace and Clifton Terrace on Monday.

The petition page mentions the urgency for the crossing, to get more residents travelling by foot instead of car to help reduce air pollution.

Julz Hallam, creator of the online petition said: “ I walk there frequently, have impaired vision coupled with delayed reactions, and so find it hard crossing busy roads.

“It isn’t JUST a crossing safety issue either. It is well known that we have a serious air pollution problem in Winchester, where 40 to 50 people a year die from air pollution related illnesses. If the city could be made more accessible to people wanting to get about on foot, this would help to increase air quality.”
